If you are looking for a job in the non-profit world, and have not worked in a non-profit organizations before, there are a few things you can do to expand your chances of finding one.

Experience helps — While it helps if you already have non-profit experience, it does not mean you cannot get it before you even apply for a job.

That is because most non-profits look at volunteer experience with another non-profit as being almost as valid as having worked at one. Volunteer experience is easy to get, as all you need to do is contact a non-profit you are interested in and ask if you can help.

Once in, you can also decide if the non-profit world is actually the right fit for you, or if a corporate job may be better.

Get a few months of volunteer experience with a reputable non-profit, and you may be surprised how much easier it becomes to get a job.

The Center for Non Profit Management — This should be the first place you look at once your job hunt actually starts, as they have a job listing that is updated daily on their website.

Many major cities around the United States have a local branch of this organization, and each one will have job listings for that area. Check out the one in your city, as many of the jobs listed will not be advertised anywhere else.

Sign up with a recruitment agencies — There are a number of recruitment agencies that specialize in non-profit jobs. You will find that the top ones have an online website where you can register and submit your resume for consideration.

If they like what they see, they will usually make arrangements for you to have an interview. After all, they want to meet the person they will be submitting to non-profit organizations as the ideal candidate for a job.

Do not just sign up with one recruitment agency, however, as most of them will represent different non-profits, so different jobs will be available through them. Instead, register with as many as you can find so that your chances of finding a job you are interested in improves.

Online job boards are vital — One of the easiest places to find a huge number of available non-profit jobs is on one of the non-profit job boards that are currently online.

Some of the job boards specialize in local or national jobs, and some also cover international positions, but all have a huge number of jobs and all update their listings daily.

These job boards also allow you to apply for jobs directly through their websites. First, you will have to upload your current resume and a recent photograph. This is then put into the job board’s database, so prospective employers can look at it to see if you may be a good fit for a job they are currently trying to fit.

You can also submit your resume for jobs that are available via the non-profit job board, and request an interview for any you are interested in.
